After finding out that West Virginia just updated their official State song, it got me thinking that maybe Maryland should follow suit. When I did some research, I discovered that official State songs rarely get changed, with some still holding on to their tune from 1913 (hello, Indiana!). West Virginiga just updated their State song from their 3 official State songs from 1963, and it is now: "Take Me Home, Country Roads" by John Denver, which I find very fitting. John, by the way, is also the composer of the Colorado State song that was recognized in 2007: "Rocky Mountain High". I do believe it is time for Maryland's State song to get a makeover -- no offense, James Ryder Randall, we all love "Maryland My Maryland" but we could just use that as our official Christmas song since it's sung to the tune of "O'Tannenbaum". Plus, it's from 1939! Maybe we could get a bunch of great local Maryland musicians to come together and produce a fresh State song? It would definitely have to be a more rockin' tune this time - something cool, like Ohio's State song "Hang On Sloopy" or Washington State's (unofficial) song "Louie, Louie". We could even keep Maryland My Maryland as the State song and add another State song category. Massachusettes has 8 State songs, including State Polka, State Glee Club song and State Anthem! Maybe add a State Classic Rock song and make us the coolest state in the nation:) What would your pick be? While you're thinking about it, be sure and tune in call when you hear any Queen song today (March 12) for your chance to win Queen tickets for their show this summer at Merriweather Post Pavilion!!
