Most musicians would agree that writing a good song is a pretty arduous task.  It has to be frustrating when another band has a bigger hit than you, covering YOUR song.  Even more maddening is when people prefer the cover version and/or don't even know who wrote and recorded the original.  Here's a list of 10 popular songs where the cover version turned out more successful than the original.

ALL ALONG THE WATCHTOWER ~ The Jimi Hendrix Experience

....original artist:  Bob Dylan

BLACK MAGIC WOMAN ~ Santana

....original artist:  Fleetwood Mac

BLINDED BY THE LIGHT ~ Manfred Mann's Earth Band

....original artist:  Bruce Springsteen

DOWNTOWN TRAIN ~ Rod Stewart

....original artist:  Tom Waits

I LOVE ROCK AND ROLL ~ Joan Jett and The Blackhearts

....original artist:  The Arrows

THE MAN WHO SOLD THE WORLD ~ Nirvana

....original artist:  David Bowie

ME AND BOBBY McGEE ~ Janis Joplin

....original artist:  Kris Kristofferson

MR TAMBOURINE MAN ~ The Byrds

....original artist:  Bob Dylan

WITHOUT YOU ~ Nilsson

....original artist:  Badfinger

WOODSTOCK ~ Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young

....original artist:  Joni Mitchell

Are there any songs you would add to this list?   Even though the original by Elmore James is great, I prefer Stevie Ray Vaughan's version of The Sky is Crying!  I also like both the Jackson Browne (original) and Eagles version of "Take it Easy."  Colleen
